AIOE server timing out
(too old to reply)

It seems both the news server and the web server
are timing out.

nntp.aioe.org port 119

https://news.aioe.org/documentation/access-restrictions/

Cycling the power on my networking equipment (to get a new
IP from my provider), does not change the symptoms.

***@ryz:~$ ping news.aioe.org
PING news.aioe.org (46.165.242.91) 56(84) bytes of data.
From po-2.ce07.fra-01.de.leaseweb.net (212.95.37.31) icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable

It is a problem at their site, it seems that the router cannot reach
the host, maybe cable unplugged, server shutted down, NIC disabled...

Obviously wasn't a simple broken link if one server is back up with no
services. Wonder if they were hacked?

hearsay (but from a trustable source): server broke down, will be on
asap but rebuilding the disk array may take some time, paolo (aioe
master) is working on it.

I think he couldn't be arsed to fix it and so left it
broke. As for Paolo, it would be easy for him to post
what is up, but he hasn't. Maybe because he can't be
bothered with it any more. It's not unheard of for
newsadmins to walk away. Mike Horwath did that with his
Octanews NSP.

Albasani suffered when its founder and admin, Alexander Bartolich
(sp?) died young from a heart attack and his volunteer replacement
lacked the expertise to recover it after a crash.

Weren't Mike's servers running on his employers machines? I've an
idea that RFN, his text server, was still running there after Mike
left their employment. I don't know this to be a fact, only rumour.
Anyway, I heard that RFN was knocked over by a DDOS attack after
Mike left and there was nobody with access to pick it up again.

ISTR that the new guy had a baby, or summit like that,
and he just didn't have the time or inclination to fix
the swerver. However, this is just from my rather poor
memory.

Yes, Mike was running Octanews on IPhouse's machines, but
he was still in the employ of them when he walked away
from Octanews. I know because I'd bought a block from
him. He didn't answer any of the many questions put to
him on the support group while his server threw up fault
after fault before he pulled the plug. Yet at the same
time he was posting on the IPhouse support newsgroup.

I've seen a report that aioe's German colo server had a RAID
controller failure that wiped out his whole disk array. It seems
it will be a matter of days before it's rebuilt, if not longer. I don't
think Paolo has hands-on access so he's reliant on the colo techs.

Okay. I only occasionally use his server, so I'm not that
inconvenienced if it comes back or not. There's plenty of
third party servers he could post an update from, not
doing so looks like he can't be bothered to do it.

Rather makes you wonder what the point of RAID is. It simply moves the
single point of failure from the disk to the controller.

Depends. If you use software RAID like mdadm, you don't need a specific
controller.

They have at least 2 servers nntp.aioe.org and news.aioe.org so that can't be
right. If they've both been destroyed thats almost certainly a hack.

Wow, you've heard of routing! You're so so clever! Did mummy just explain it
to you and now you think you can just use it as an answer to any random
connection issue?

Go have a sit down and ask yourself what the point of routing 2 addresses
on the same subnet (46.165.242.*) to one server is. If the routing to that
subnet fails then BOTH addresses will be dead.

When you've done that and your lonely braincell has recovered ask yourself
how one server can operate as a failover for itself.

Digging through that contorted grammar I think you seem to think that
news.aioe.org and nntp.aioe.org are held by different ISPs. They're not,
they both belong to Leaseweb Deustchland. I'm sure you know how to find that
information for yourself being so smart.

As for 2 servers:

fenris$ ping news.aioe.org
PING news.aioe.org (46.165.242.91): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 46.165.242.91: icmp_seq=0 ttl=49 time=32.022 ms

fenris$ ping nntp.aioe.org
PING nntp.aioe.org (46.165.242.75): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0

Oh wait, you think they're 2 seperate cards in a single machine, right? My

We like many service providers have for decades assigned multiple IP's to
clients, especially to those who have multiple nics, but only Paolo and
leaseweb know his setup, I am surprised it is taking so long to rebuild
his array given he doesn't have a huge retention period.

True , but you can make some logical deductions and the most logical one
here is he has 2 machines , one is a backup for the other , and currently
one is down.

I suppose its possible they could be 2 NICs in the same machine and one has
coincidentaly had a hardware failure which somehow destroyed the disks or
someone at the server farm pulled the network cable out of it , but I tend to
follow Occams Razor.

this ^^

also, a "machine" could be a single modem/router with two wan
interfaces that could handle above the "single wan interface"
maximum concurrent connections despite the maximum data
troughtput; as for many high level online database having
multiple wan connections the effective speed/max troughtput is
secondary to the capability to handle multiple concurrent
connections and limit connectivity problems (e.g. during a
DOS attack.

It's not just USENET that's down, the HTTP side of AIOE.ORG is down as well.
There's no response from any of the known *.aioe.org servers. If it wasn't
for the updates in this group, I'd be led to believe aioe had been wiped off
the map or had the plug pulled by their upstream.

I'm glad it's not the case and they will be back soon. It's a good service,
it would be a pity for it to go away for good.

But there's no services running on there.

This will give the path to get there.
And hint at where the rental server is.

tracert news.aioe.org

Perhaps you should take that advice.
Did you ever took your own advice ? no ? LOL no surprise, but no
- YOU are the one who insulted
- YOU are the one childishly attacking my being not native to english
- YOU are ther one who CUT in a PATHETIC and FRUITLESS attempt to dodge
your own claim.
- in conclusion: YOU are laugable, at least.
- go ahead, make me laugh more.
You're either a stroppy teenager or an aspie. Which is it?

No you're not. Happy people don't have verbose rants in capitals claiming
how funny everything is - you're pissed off you can't win this and its highly
amusing :)

So i'm angry, BUT i see you patetically dodged the question again,
describe HOW 2 different ISP assigned IPs, without a shadow of a doubt
are the telltale leading to the unquestionable assumption "They have
at
least 2 servers".
I've already explained. If you're too dumb to understand thats your problem
angry man, not mine.

Go on, have another little strop, sorry, I mean laugh :)

YOU claimed there were more than 1 server because of the 2 different
IPs
YOU have the burdain of sustaining your claims
One is down, one isn't. Occans razor suggests that means 2 different
servers especially when aioe actually stated one their website that one was
a backup for the other.
occam razor SUGGEST, you CLAIMED: can you understand the difference ?
Wow, now you're clutching at straws :) Do you understand "figure of speech"?

would be 2 servers and not VMs either because they'd have been backed up
by any half decent admin and be up and running again long ago.

nice try btw: you recovered from straight pathetic to laugable
patethic.
Mad people often laugh a lot, usually accompanied by rocking backwards
and forwards and dribbling. Hope you haven't hurt yourself or wet your
trousers :)
blah blah blah but again, no answer to YOUR claim... opps sorry, your
"logicaly deducted" (ROTFL).
I think its rather obvious now you're just a rather stupid troll.
Go do one.
------> They have at least 2 servers nntp.aioe.org and news.aioe.org
-----> those are 2 DNS entry, it can either be the same IP at the
-----> endpoint or 2 NIC in the very same machine.
----> They're not the same IP
---> So you suggest
--> "I" suggest.
-> Its obvious English isn't your first language, but no need to act
-> like a dick just because you've misunderstood something.
was me who misunderstood or you with your attitude and magic glass
ball that can see the "blade servers in a rack" of in Paolo's basement
and has the audacity to throw wild guesses (and insults) and assume
that
I am the one who made wild claims, karen ?
Who is "karen", kooky? There is nobody in this newsgroup using that alias.
"proof, kook"
Proof? Can you see anyone posting using the nym "Karen"?
No? Then don't be so fucking stupid.
One twat playing that game is enough for any newsgroup.

Says the moron who set the follow-up to alt.dev.null. Whats the
matter, getting frustrated you can't win?
I've been on usenet too long to be fooled by that amateur hour trick sonny.
Followup-To: alt.dev.null
Sorry sonny, you're not going to get the drop-the-mic-exit-stage-left
moment you're hoping for.

It seems both the news server and the web server
are timing out.
   nntp.aioe.org port 119
   https://news.aioe.org/documentation/access-restrictions/
Cycling the power on my networking equipment (to get a new
IP from my provider), does not change the symptoms.
