honestly I do not know

I added that hierarchy also to see what it is, I've never even heard of
it but I receive several messages from other servers posted on those
groups

i will investigate

<snip>

Thanks for the new groups.

My analysis says:

AIOE now has 42961 groups.

Only 5653 groups have 1 or more posts.

88% of the groups have no posts. Any reason to continue to carry these
groups? Other than it would require work to delete them.

Usenet groups are divided into hierarchies and each hierarchy is
administered by a group of people who decide which groups are part of it.
Each newsmaster chooses which hierarchies he wants to be carried by the
server then he delegates who manages the hierarchy to handle the groups
that are part of it.
The empty groups that you see on the server are part of a hierarchy and
you should ask to those who manage each of them to delete the useless
ones.
Moreover, empty groups do not consume server resources so from the
newsmaster's point of view nothing changes if they are left on the server.
Many hierarchies are abandoned and this is the real problem. No
management means that there is no longer anyone who creates and cancels
groups, that handles abuse and controls that everything works as it
should.
At the moment, the only hierarchies i'm sure that are still managed are
it. *, fr. * and uk. * Also de. * I think it is abandoned.

I think the "Big Eight" hierarchy is still managed ;-) . The Grim Reaper
comes round occasionally and culls abandoned newsgroups there.

I subscribe to a couple of groups in the demon.* hierarchy, which was
set up by the Demon ISP way back in the 90s . There are still a couple
of demon groups with significant traffic.

Demon in it's original from no longer exists , and I doubt if there is
anyone at Vodafone ( who inherited it ) has the knowledge or more
importantly the control keys to delete any of it. The group's topics
are a throwback to the 90's. E.g demon.ip.support.win95

nl.* is still managed as well. Sometimes a poor soul tries to create a
newsgroup through nl.newsgroups, but they're always shot down.

be.* used to be managed through usenet.be, but I guess that guy gave up
since there's nothing to see at usenet.be (still registered though, I'm
guessing by a different person). Wayback Machine shows a page in 2017,
but there's nothing to see...

Hello,

that's not the point.

If you search the aioe repository for NG with names which sound
interesting (for example "braunschweig", my hometown), nowadays you will
find lots of hits, but most of them are completely useless, because the
NG are completely inactive. So these entries might not consume server
resources, but they consume users' time and patience. They should be
removed from aioe.

My example finds several usegroups related to "Braunschweig"
<Loading Image...>, but
only the 2 ones with a checkmarks still have some minimum activity, the
other ones are "dead". they should no longer be listet at aioe.

Just because no one answers those empty groups now doesn't mean they won't
later. They are propogated around the world, not just on aioe.org. If you
don't want to see them just remove them from your news reader.

Yes it is a pain to weed thrugh all the groups aioe and other servers have.
But we find such interesting posts and people when we take the time to do
so.

In that case users' don't have to waste time searching for so called
"useless" newsgroups. Is that what you do? then stop doing it and your
time and patience will not be consumed.

How did you know about these usergroups? You must be spending lot of
time searching for them. You should be doing something useful and not
searching for useless newsgroups.

All this void is so sad.

Is there a way to get usenet more active again, in your opinion?
Or is it completely doomed to be taken over by failbook and such?

Well,

the problem here is that too many people post who already learned to
write, but not to read.

Bye!
